QUÉBEC PENSION PLAN

If the deceased person contributed to the Québec Pension Plan (contributions deducted at source by the employer during employment) for a number of years, a death benefit can be obtained.  The amount is a maximum of $2,500 (unchanged since October 1st, 1999).  Basically, the benefit is paid in one of two ways: either through a refund to the person who paid the funeral home (RRQ will send a cheque) or to the estate after 60 days has lapsed. Furthermore, it is possible that other benefits be payable to you at the time of the death, such as a pension of surviving spouse and\or orphan children. For more information, please refer to Régie des rentes du Québec web site.

Service Canada

OLD AGE SECURITY PENSION

The estate is entitled to receive the pension cheque of the month in which the death has occurred. For more information, please refer to Service Canada web site.

Ministère de l'Emploi et Solidarité sociale

QUÉBEC – EMPLOI ET SOLIDARITÉ SOCIALE DEPT.

This benefit is the last option available.  It is payable only if there is no other source to turn to, to pay the minimum $2,500 (since October 1st, 1999) for funeral expenses.  The eligibility requirements are strict and the government has the right not to pay the full amount if it believes that the deceased persons had means to pay. CSST

Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CSST)

La CSST peut verser une prestation de décès et des indemnités aux ayants droits (conjoint, enfants ou parents – mère, père, frères et sœurs) lorsqu’une personne décède à la suite d’un accident de travail ou d’une maladie reliée au travail. SAAQ

SOCIÉTÉ DE L’ASSURANCE AUTOMOBILE DU QUÉBEC (SAAQ)

The SAAQ may pay a death benefit and/or compensation to the legal heirs (spouse, children or parents – mother, father, brothers or sisters) when a person dies as a result of a automobile accident (driver, passenger or pedestrian).For more information, please refer to Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec web site.

IVAC

CRIME VICTIMS COMPENSATION ACT

Some death benefits may be requested from IVAC (Indemnisation des victimes d’actes criminels)when a death occured during an act of good citizenship or as a result of a criminal act. For more information, please refer to Indemnisation des victimes d’actes criminels.

Vétérans

VETERANS AND SERVICEMEN

The Department of Veterans Affairs or the Department of National Defence can take care of the funeral for veterans and military personnel.  The eligibility is strict.  Please refer to these department web sites.

INSURANCES

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel Insurance can be part of a collective group insurance at work, one that can be purchased for vacations (example:  Blue Cross, CAA etc) or credit cards also provide compensation for a death while traveling. There also exists benefits in case of hunting accidents.

LIFE INSURANCE

Should a life insurance policy be taken on the deceased, the beneficiaries are entitled to receive, either individually or as part of the estate, compensation for this insurance policy.  It is necessary to first read the insurance contract attentively, to make sure of all the conditions applicable.  An important thing to remember when preparing an estate planning, is to appoint one or more beneficiaries, as well as  legal heirs as beneficiaries to this insurance policy.
